There comes a point in every growing online stores life where the current setup starts to feel tight.
You want to change your checkout. You want to automate more. You need a wholesale channel. You are prepping for a flash sale that could crash a standard server.
That point is exactly what Shopify Plus was built for.
But Shopify Plus is not for everyone. It starts at $2,300 per month. That is a big jump from the $299/month Advanced plan (billed annually). Before you sign anything, you need to know what you are actually getting and whether the math makes sense for your store.
At Lucent Innovation, we have been a Shopify Plus Partner since 2016. We have built, migrated and scaled dozens of Plus stores. This guide is the honest breakdown we wish more brands had before they reached out. No fluff. No jargon. Just what Shopify Plus is, what it does, and when it is worth it.
What Is Shopify Plus?
Shopify Plus is the enterprise tier of the Shopify platform. It sits above the Basic ($39/month), Grow ($105/month) and Advanced ($299/month annual) plans. It was launched in 2014 specifically for fast-growing brands that need more power than standard Shopify can offer.
Think of it this way: regular Shopify handles the basics really well. Shopify Plus goes further. It gives merchants the tools to customize at a deeper level, scale without breaking, and run complex operations from one place.
As of 2026, over 47,000 brands run on Shopify Plus worldwide. They range from digitally native startups to legacy retailers doing billions in annual revenue.
Who Is Shopify Plus For?
Shopify Plus is not the right fit for every brand. It is built for a specific type of merchant.
You are likely a good fit if you:
- Do $1 million or more per year in online revenue
- Sell to both consumers and businesses (DTC and B2B together)
- Run stores, or plan to run stores, in multiple countries
- Need a customized checkout experience that goes beyond theme settings
- Are planning a major product launch or high-traffic flash sale
- Have a team of more than 15 people who need access to your Shopify admin
You are probably NOT ready for Shopify Plus if:
- Your annual revenue is under $500K
- You run a single store with no B2B or international plans
- You can solve your current problems with a well-chosen third-party app
Shopify Plus Features in 2026
This is the part most people come for. Here is a clear breakdown of what Shopify Plus actually gives you over standard plans.
1. Checkout Extensibility (Custom Checkout)
Standard Shopify locks the checkout. You can only change colors and your logo.
With Shopify Plus, you can go much deeper. You can add custom fields, insert upsell blocks inside checkout, create loyalty tier discounts, stack complex discount rules, and build completely separate checkout flows for B2B vs DTC customers.
This is now done through Checkout Extensibility, a framework that uses UI Extensions, Shopify Functions, and the Branding API. The old checkout.liquid was fully sunset in August 2025 and no longer works.
Even a small improvement in checkout conversion on a $5M store can generate hundreds of thousands of dollars in extra revenue per year. This feature is often the single biggest reason brands upgrade.
2. Shopify Flow (Advanced Automation)
Shopify Flow is a visual automation builder. You set up rules using "if this happens, do that" logic.
Common uses include:
- Tagging a customer as VIP when they cross a lifetime spend threshold
- Sending a Slack alert when a high-value order lands
- Routing suspicious orders to a manual review queue
- Automatically restocking items when inventory dips below a set level
Shopify Flow is available on Advanced too, but Shopify Plus gives you much more powerful multi-step workflows and deeper native integrations with tools like Klaviyo, Gorgias, Yotpo, and Recharge.
3. Launchpad (Campaign Scheduling)
Launchpad is exclusive to Shopify Plus. It lets you schedule and automate entire campaigns in advance.
You set a time for your flash sale to go live, swap your theme, change product prices, activate discounts, and launch new products. All without anyone touching the admin at midnight.
For brands running seasonal drops or influencer campaigns, Launchpad is one of the biggest time-savers on the platform. There is no equivalent tool available on the Advanced plan.
4. Native B2B on Shopify
Shopify Plus includes a built-in wholesale channel with serious depth.
You can create company profiles, assign custom price catalogs, set payment terms like Net 30 or Net 60, manage minimum order quantities, and give B2B buyers a dedicated self-serve login portal.
Important 2026 update: As of April 2, 2026, Shopify added basic B2B features to all paid plans. Basic plans now support up to 3 custom catalogs, company profiles, volume discounts, and payment terms. So if your B2B needs are simple, you may not need Plus just for that.
However, Shopify Plus still adds unlimited catalogs, advanced buyer portal configuration, complex B2B workflows, and the deeper ERP-level integration that growing wholesale operations need.
5. Expansion Stores (Up to 10)
Every Shopify Plus subscription includes up to 10 expansion stores.
These are separate storefronts for different markets, languages, currencies, or brands. They are all managed from one central Organization dashboard. You do not need separate Shopify accounts or billing cycles for each one.
This feature is often the deciding factor for international brands. Managing two or three separate Advanced stores adds up fast in both cost and complexity. With Plus, it is all in one place.
6. Unlimited Staff Accounts
Shopify Advanced caps you at 15 staff accounts.
Shopify Plus removes that limit entirely. Your whole team, plus agency partners, plus freelancers, can all have separate logins with the right access permissions. No more shared passwords. No more audit risks from team members using the same login.
The 15-account cap on Advanced hits faster than most merchants expect, especially as your operations, marketing, CX, and development teams grow at the same time.
7. Shopify Audiences
Shopify Audiences is a Plus-only feature. It uses aggregated purchasing data across the broader Shopify merchant network to build high-intent lookalike audiences for Meta, Google, TikTok, and Pinterest.
In plain terms: it helps you find new customers who behave like your best existing buyers, often at a lower cost per acquisition.
This is a meaningful advantage for brands spending heavily on paid social and search. There is no equivalent on standard Shopify plans.
8. Higher API Limits and Infrastructure
Shopify Plus gives you up to 10x the API call limits of standard plans. This matters a lot when you have complex integrations with ERPs, warehouse management systems, or custom apps that need to sync large volumes of data.
Plus also provides 99.99% uptime and can handle more than 10,000 transactions per minute. For brands running flash sales or peak-season traffic spikes, this is not a "nice to have." It is the reason a product drop does not crash your site.

Shopify Plus Pricing in 2026
Shopify Plus pricing works in two ways depending on your contract length and monthly revenue.
Flat Fee Structure
| Contract Length | Monthly Fee |
|---|---|
| 3-Year Contract | $2,300/month |
| 1-Year Contract | $2,500/month |
Variable Fee Above the Revenue Threshold
Once your monthly Gross Merchandise Volume (GMV) exceeds approximately $800,000 to $1,000,000 (the exact threshold varies by contract, so confirm this with Shopify in writing), your fee switches from a flat rate to a variable fee based on a percentage of your monthly GMV.
- The fee is capped at $40,000 per month, no matter how high your sales go.
This design means that as your revenue grows significantly past the threshold, the fee as a percentage of your sales actually decreases. For brands doing $10M or more per month, the platform cost becomes a relatively small line item.
What Is NOT Included in the Base Fee
Budget for these extras on top of your Shopify Plus subscription:
- Third-party apps: Most Plus stores still use tools like Klaviyo, Gorgias, and Yotpo. Budget $1,500 to $5,000+ per month depending on your stack.
- Custom development: Checkout builds, Shopify Functions, headless storefronts, and app integrations typically cost $5,000 to $50,000+ depending on complexity.
- Platform migration: Moving from Magento, WooCommerce, or BigCommerce to Shopify Plus typically costs $15,000 to $50,000 depending on store size and data complexity.
- Extra expansion stores: The first 10 are included. Additional stores cost $250/month each.
- Additional POS Pro locations: The first location is included. Each extra one costs $89/month.
When Do You Actually Need Shopify Plus?
The honest answer: not as early as many agencies will tell you.
Here are the real signals that mean it is time to move to Plus.
Signal 1: Revenue Has Reached $1M+ Per Year
This is the most widely cited threshold, and it holds up. At $1M or more in annual revenue, the savings on transaction fees and the revenue lift from better automation and checkout customization typically start to justify the higher monthly cost.
Below $500K per year, Shopify Advanced combined with a well-chosen app stack almost always delivers better ROI at a fraction of the price.
Signal 2: You Need a Custom Checkout
If your conversion strategy requires custom fields, B2B-specific logic, conditional discount stacking, or any checkout flow that goes beyond what a theme can offer, you need Plus. Standard plans cannot touch the structural layer of the checkout.
This became even more critical when Shopify Scripts was deprecated on June 30, 2026. If your store previously relied on Scripts for custom pricing logic or discount stacking, those features must now be rebuilt using Shopify Functions, which are exclusive to Shopify Plus.
Signal 3: You Are Running B2B Alongside DTC
Running a wholesale operation alongside a consumer store on standard Shopify requires stitching together multiple third-party apps. On Plus, most of this is native and included.
If your B2B needs are complex (unlimited price catalogs, Net payment terms, buyer self-serve portals, ERP integration), Plus gives you a cleaner, more reliable solution and often eliminates the need for several paid apps.
Signal 4: You Need More Than One Storefront
This is often the clearest signal of all. The moment you need a second storefront for a new country, a separate brand, or a dedicated wholesale channel, Shopify Plus becomes the most cost-effective way to manage both from one place.
A second standalone Advanced store costs another $299/month per year. A third costs another $299/month. With Plus, you get up to 10 expansion stores at no extra charge. The math changes fast.
Signal 5: Your Team Has Outgrown 15 Staff Accounts
The Advanced plan's 15-account cap hits faster than most merchants expect. When developers, marketers, CX agents, operations managers, and external agencies all need access, shared logins create security issues and operational slowdowns.
Plus removes the cap. Everyone gets their own account with the right permissions.
Signal 6: Flash Sales or Peak Traffic Are Part of Your Model
Shopify Plus guarantees 99.99% uptime and can handle thousands of transactions per minute. If a product drop, limited release, or major promotional event is part of how your brand operates, the Plus infrastructure is built for exactly this.
A standard Shopify store can struggle during sudden traffic spikes. A Plus store is designed to absorb them.
Key Shopify Plus Updates in 2026
This year brought important changes that affect how the Shopify Plus upgrade decision looks.
1. Basic B2B Is Now on All Plans (April 2026)
As of April 2, 2026, Shopify added basic B2B features to Basic, Grow, and Advanced plans. This includes company profiles, up to 3 custom price catalogs, volume discounts, and payment terms.
This closes a gap that used to push many merchants toward Plus before they were ready. If basic wholesale is all you need, the standard plans may now cover you.
2. Shopify Scripts Deprecated (June 30, 2026)
Shopify Scripts is gone. If your store relied on Scripts for custom checkout logic, dynamic discounts, or line item manipulation, those features must now be rebuilt using Shopify Functions.
Shopify Functions are exclusive to Shopify Plus. This is one of the main reasons more merchants are making the move to Plus in 2026, even if they were on the fence before.
3. checkout.liquid Is Gone (August 2025)
Any article still mentioning checkout.liquid as a current feature is out of date. All checkout customization now goes through Checkout Extensibility (UI Extensions, Shopify Functions, and the Branding API).
If you have a custom checkout build from before 2023, it has already stopped working and needs to be rebuilt.
Shopify Plus vs Magento vs BigCommerce
If you are evaluating enterprise platforms, here is a clear comparison of your main options.
| Feature | Shopify Plus | Adobe Commerce (Magento) | BigCommerce Enterprise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starting Price | $2,300/month | $22,000+/year | Custom quote |
| Hosting | Fully managed, included | Self-managed or cloud add-on | Managed |
| Customization Level | High (Checkout Extensibility) | Very High (open source) | High |
| Typical Setup Time | Weeks | Months | Weeks |
| Technical Complexity | Low to Medium | High | Low to Medium |
| B2B Native | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| App Ecosystem | 8,000+ apps | Large (extensions marketplace) | Moderate |
| Uptime Guarantee | 99.99% | Varies | 99.99% |
Shopify Plus wins on speed to launch, managed infrastructure, and a massive app ecosystem. Magento wins on raw backend customization but requires significant ongoing developer resources and budget. BigCommerce is a solid middle ground with good enterprise features but a smaller partner and app ecosystem.
For most D2C brands and mid-market retailers, Shopify Plus delivers the best balance of power and operational simplicity.
How a Shopify Plus Agency Can Help
Most brands do not get the most out of Shopify Plus because they set it up themselves or use a developer who has never built on Plus before.
Shopify Plus is not a plug-and-play upgrade. The checkout customization, Flow automations, B2B setup, and expansion store configurations all need to be built correctly from the start. A wrong setup costs real money in lost conversions and broken integrations.
This is where working with a specialized Shopify Plus development agency makes a measurable difference.
A specialist partner will help you:
- Build Checkout Extensibility setups designed for your specific conversion goals
- Create Shopify Flow automations that replace 3 to 5 expensive third-party apps
- Set up native B2B properly, including buyer portals and ERP-level sync
- Configure expansion stores for international markets with local currencies and languages
- Migrate your store from Magento, WooCommerce, or BigCommerce with zero data loss
- Build custom Shopify apps tailored to your unique operational needs
The difference between a Plus store built by a generalist and one built by a certified Plus partner often shows up directly in revenue and retention within the first 90 days.
